Mystical Egypt Itinerary
Itinerary: Day 8 to Day 14
Day 8:
Early risers can float over the world's largest open-air museum in an optional hot air balloon excursion over the West Bank of Luxor. Then, we will absorb history while visiting the massive Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Kings, where the great Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt were buried in quest for the immortal life. The ancient Egyptians lived on the East Bank where the sun rises and buried their dead on the West Bank where the sun sets.
We continue to the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the first great woman in recorded history and a woman who dared to challenge the tradition of male kingship. An iron-willed feminist, Hatshepsut made a statement as pharaoh by dressing in men's clothing and wearing the ceremonial beard to complete her image. Return to your cruise to sail for Edfu.
Day 9:
Stir your imagination at the best-preserved temple in Egypt, the Temple of Horus (the falcon-headed god). Learn about the famous Edfu drama illustrating the struggle between good and the evil. Become aware of the temple's enormous dimensions, with its vast courtyard, a forest of towering columns, and high ceilings. Horus is associated with higher vision and clarity. The eye of Horus greatly relates to his myth and power: the left eye represents the lunar, intuitive, and feminine energy; the right eye is connected to the solar, masculine, action, and yang energy. Both are necessary for true power to exist.
Set sail for Kom Ombo and explore an unusual "double temple," where everything is duplicated along the temple's main axis, in dedication to the gods Horus and Sobek. The duality of light/dark, yin/yang, conscious/unconscious is apparent in this ancient site. One of the most powerful places in Kom Ombo is the Seat of Neutrality, which is placed on the exact centerline between the parts of the temple that are dedicated to Horus or Sobek, and Light or Dark. Sitting on this stone seat helps you enter into a state of neutrality and complete stillness.
Set sail tonight for Aswan, enjoy an Egyptian dinner buffet, and be a local for a night at the always fun and entertaining Galabiya party!
Day 10:
Experience the Nile like the ancients did - on a leisurely and traditional felucca sail boat ride. Then, explore the peaceful paradise of Elephantine Island, the old capital city of Aswan that dates back to 3000 B.C.
At Philae Temple, one of the most unique and sacred temples of Egypt, immerse yourself in private meditation in the sanctuary of Isis, the mysterious goddess of divine love, magic, healing, and forgiveness. Philae is one of the most beautiful sites in Egypt. It is surrounded by water and filled with enchantment and the energy of love, which is so palpable it feels as if one is floating in liquid love.
Day 11:
An early morning bus journey takes us 200 km to the south of Aswan, across the Sahara desert, to stand in awe of two of the most immense and magnificent monuments in the world - the famous Temples of Abu Simbel - built by King Ramses II in 13th century B.C. The temples were miraculously rescued from the rising waters of Aswan High Dam between 1960 and 1970. An evening flight returns you to Cairo.
Day 12:
On this full-day tour to Coptic and Islamic Egypt, delve into the two religions that followed the ancient Egyptian religion. Start by touring the Citadel and the Alabaster mosque of Mohamed Ali Pasha, and then the monumental Sultan Hassan's mosque.
After lunch, you will discover the old Coptic district, where Jesus and the Holy Family took refuge for a few weeks in a crypt that was later converted into a church. Then, spend the afternoon shopping in the old and intoxicating Khan El-Khalili Bazaar and delight in the hustle and bustle of the enigmatic city of Cairo. The atmosphere of this traditional market, together with the labyrinth layout of the streets, gives you a glimpse into what medieval markets once were like.
Day 13:
Create your own free day in Cairo to discover at your leisure, or take in an optional tour with lunch to Egypt's second largest city - beautiful Alexandria - known as "The Bride of the Mediterranean" because its exotic atmosphere is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern.
This tour includes a visit to the site of the Old Lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the Ancient world. In 1479, Sultan Qaitbay, who came to Egypt as a slave, had an imposing fortress built on the lighthouse's foundations. A recent restoration has left the entire structure pristine and glowing like lit alabaster, and the fort's greatest attraction is the view from the battlements back over the bay toward Alexandria.
Next, you will descend into ancient Roman catacombs, visit Pompey's Pillar and the underground subsidiary library, and finally tour the New Library of Alexandria before you return back to Cairo.
Day 14:
Say a fond farewell to Egypt! Get transferred to the airport for your flight back home after a transformational journey, knowing that all you have seen, loved, and shared will last a lifetime as unforgettable memories! Thank you for your love and participation in this magical event.
