Help Others

It's all just words if you're not actually out there in the world trying to make a difference. This is a big part of the reason why I started Global Awakening In Action (GAIA) back in 2007.

Recent activities include:

  • Second Harvest's Lunch Money Day. On February 17, 2011, GAIA participated in Lunch Money Day, which is Second Harvest’s annual one-day campaign that asks Torontonians to donate what they would usually spend on lunch. Photo link

  • Cover Toronto Blanket Drive. We began this in winter 2010. We collect donated blankets and other warm items and distribute them to homeless people on the streets of Toronto. Photo link

  • Kindness Campaign. We began this in spring 2010. We publish a monthly article featuring kindness stories and suggesting selfless acts of kindness in Good News Toronto.

  • Food sorting at the North York Harvest Food Bank. We began this initiative in November 2010 and plan to keep doing it. Photo link
The idea is to join a community of like-minded people and find out first-hand how volunteering leads to experiencing the joy of selfless service. If you want to be part of these and other upcoming initiatives, sign up to receive our newsletter or join the Global Awakening In Action website. At GAIA you can also peruse a list of past events, or click through inspiring photos of previous campaigns, initiatives, and events.

Selfless Service

Many people believe that becoming more spiritual leads to a kind of passivity. Nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality your ability and inclination to be of service grows stronger because as your ego subsides you become more sensitive to the suffering of others. The big difference is that you are no longer attached to the outcome of your actions in quite the same way. This is something that is discussed explicitly in one of the world's great spiritual texts, The Bhagavad Gita. "Renounce the fruit of your actions," says Krishna to Arjuna. Of course you prefer the outcome to be positive, but you stop needing the little ego kick that comes with this, and you don't dwell and agonize if things don't go exactly as planned. You are able to respond to new conditions with your full presence in an optimizing way. Ultimately this "selfless service" – also known as seva in Sanskrit – is more powerful and efficient than any ego-driven act because it doesn't lead to the same degree of egoic feedback in either yourself or others. You simply do good deeds unselfishly, helping others for the sake of helping others, without needing to be congratulated or thanked for your efforts. The only way to fully grok this idea is to engage in selfless service and find out for yourself.
